The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller

The first story I will be reading this semester is Frank Miller’s critically acclaimed graphic novel, “The Dark Knight Returns,” which was first published in 1986. The story of “The Dark Knight Returns” centers around a middle aged Bruce Wayne who comes out of a ten year retirement to clean up the streets of Gotham city. This graphic novel is noteworthy because it represents a substantial shift in the portrayal of Batman from the campy and somewhat humorous individual of the past, to the dark, gritty, and realistic character of the present.
